I didn't think actual astronomers call them 'snowballs' or clumps of ice.

I think CNN and other reporters were the snowball crew.

They seem to have poor sources.

New images show it's just as bright when it was approaching perihelion. WHy is the scientific community and media so quick to dismiss it?

If it from real astronomers, we are hearing it second hand from news and spokespeople. No doubt stuff gets lost in transition. Also I think science is giving both possibilities and people take a pick, their guess.
