Yup, and all moshiach is supposed to do is give them Israel - at least, originally.lkwalker wrote:Jesus never claimed to be the Moshiach. The parchment on the top of the cross upon which he was executed read: Iesus the Nazarene King of Iudia, according to saint John. The reason for that simple irony?- that the word ' Moshiach' meant, for the Jews at the time, 'King'- the inheritor of King David. All of the Synoptics go to great lengths in establishing a genealogical connection between Jesus and David- two men separated in history by 700 years. At the end of the day what Jesus was was a fine Pharisaical philosopher in the very best tradition of Mishna- in by no means the new King who would liberate Judea from Pagan occupation.

Both nations, Israel and Judah, united and without occupation by pagan invaders, in the Maccabean tradition.

Historically, yup, Yeshuva was just one of many 'messiahs' at the time trying to fulfill that prophecy of a King who would bring them all together. Or, maybe that's just what the followers wanted to believe. Maybe he was just hanging and trying to teach them how to live well, peacefully. A visionary.
Symbolically, he evolved into something else. I wonder what Christianity would have looked like today if the Peterine or Jamesian type of 'christianity' won out over Paul's deft power maneouvering.
Indicus does have a point in a way.
I've often thought that 'beggars' aren't just there for us to give money to but also to inspire us to compassion.
