Gerald Kaufman is a British MP, not Israeli. And while he rightly considers the Palestinians to be victims of Israeli terror he does not equate this treatment with a Shoah. We should make no mistake here- and should reject the temptation to to equivocate. To do so is an insult to both arabs and Jews and is an especially egregious revision of history. It is the equivalent of the white supremist taunt against the African Americans that the complicity of some of their ancestors in the European slave trade is tantamount to community responsibility for the institution of slavery and racism per se. The Palestinian- Israeli struggle is, in essence, political in nature, not racial- despite the atrocities committed by one segment of each particular community upon the other. Violence, terrorism is often an outgrowth of conflicting polities. Shoah is the result of racial bigotry and is essentially apolitical. The 1947 Partition pursuant to Balfour was a political solution, however flawed and ill-conceived. In that sense it shares elements of the partition of India during the same era and equally shares similar results- nationalist enmity, terror, and continuing conflict and persecution. The Shoa was of a different nature. It was a deliberate extermination regimen based on racial hatred and false science, raised to an industrial level. The distinctions are not rhetorical- they are real and they are critical in the understanding of history. I hope you come to understand the difference.
