Isn't that the essense of selfishness?
It is indeed.

I don't think so. You can only do so much.

I begin with my own immediate family in making sure they are happy, healthy and looked after.

Then I extend my hand to friends and people I know.

I also extend my hand to strangers and various charities on a regular basis.

I am anything but selfish.

Many there don't want our help and when I say "take care of your own", there are people there fully capable of doing that there.

A perfect example of why I think the way I do is:

- BE has an opinion or feeling about something
- TT has an opinion or feeling about something
- Pam agrees with one of you only

If I help the one I agree with, what have I done to the other?

Disagree with me all you want, it doesn't bother me one bit.

I am not so insecure that I need you to validate or support any of my opinions.

Those 'strangers' in Libya need our help. Like it or not- they are in fact our brothers and sisters.

Disagreeing wih you should not bother you. And, an opinion voiced should not bother you.

Perhaps my example was not gory enough. I meant it in the sense of what is going on now in Libya, Pakistan, Israel..... etc.

Who am I to interfere there, when I can't even look after my own backyard?

The more important question is: Who am I to sit quietly by and watch people suffer? What gives me the right to silently accept and therefor support crimes against humanity?

In my opinion...

Where did I say I support those crimes?

I sit.... but not quietly, I don't like the way women are treated there, I don't like their laws of killing someone for an infidelity, I don't agree to cut off the hand of a theif that was only stealing food to survive.

I voice my opinion about what I think is right and wrong... probably as much as you are doing TT. I don't see you living in those countries fighting the fight alongside of them.

I can think one thing but unless I want to go there and do something about it, live with them, find out why only a few are seeking help while others are not it is best "in my opinion" to let them deal with their own.

I agree that the revolts and uprisings are the way they should be dealing with this.

You don't have to actually move to another country to support people there finacially and/or politically. What gives you that idea?

Modern technology and means of communications are wonderful inventions.

They have my moral support, if they need my money I will send that too. No where do I say I agree with what is going on there, what I disagree with is sending our loved ones and children there to deal with those problems.

I will not send your sons or daughters or my sons to uphold my moral beliefs.

they don't need your money. what they need is the support of our communities, i.e. our nations. that is enough.
