2016 NFL draft

Post by Pigeon » Fri Apr 29, 2016 2:48 am

Houston trades up (swaps position) with Washington to pick WR Will Fuller
Washington then picks WR Josh Doctson

Talks says Doctson has better hand over speed with Fuller.

Time will tell about this pick.

Chargers looking to beef up defense. Seen some comments made compare him to a smaller version of JJ Watt.

If that is the case, good deal and future.

Overall good reviews but some say the team needs offensive line.
You've probably seen this at NFL.com

Sources Tell Us "I think all that hype headed into the year hurt him some because he's not a superman off the edge. But he's a good player. He's athletic with good hands and every pass rusher starts to add to what they do in the pros. If he dedicates himself to the game, he's going to be one of the safest guys in the draft." -- NFC director of personnel

NFL Comparison Ryan Kerrigan

Bottom Line Body beautiful college end who has the talent and upside to play with a hand down or standing in the pros. Bosa might not have the pure edge speed to be an elite pass rusher, but his hand usage and ability to generate push as a bull-rusher should make him a very good 4-3 base end or a 3-4 outside linebacker. Bosa has a few more flaws than some may be willing to admit and his upside might be good rather than great, but his traits and growth potential as a player make him a safe selection. Bosa might be at his best with a defensive coordinator willing to move him around the field.

Needs Analysis: The additions of QB Brock Osweiler and RB Lamar Miller take two huge needs off the draft board for the Texans, but there is always a chance they could still draft one of those spots in a later round for depth. The Texans want to add team speed and will look to do that at wide receiver. Left tackle Duane Brown is coming off of a season-ending injury and the center spot is still unsettled with the loss of Ben Jones, so the offensive line will almost certainly get a look in this draft.

Round 1, Pick 21 (21) (From Redskins) Will Fuller WR 6'0" 186 Notre Dame 6.2

Pick Analysis: "This pick makes a ton of sense to me. He has totally legit speed; a game-changer from a speed perspective. He tracks the deep ball extremely well. I worry about his hands. He's a little bit like Ted Ginn of the Panthers. He will make big plays, but you will have to put up with a few drops." -- Mike Mayock

Round 2, Pick 19 (50) (From Falcons) Nick Martin OG 6'4" 299 Notre Dame 5.7

Pick Analysis: "The Texans signed a quarterback in free agent. So, first you draft a wide receiver in Will Fuller. Then, you draft one of the top centers in the draft. Martin could play in the league for 10 years." -- Mike Mayock

Round 3, Pick 22 (85) Braxton Miller WR 6'1" 201 Ohio St. 5.6

Pick Analysis: "He has a great skill set. He was a back-to-back player of the year in the Big Ten. He's a very elusive player and has top-end speed. He was a great teammate; elected captain for us." -- Ohio State coach Urban Meyer

Round 4, Pick 21 (119) Tyler Ervin RB 5'10" 192 San Jose St. 5.3

Pick Analysis: Ervin, a flashy space weapon, will put together a solid highlight package as Houston's scatback. Bill O'Brien can get creative with Ervin and his open-field running ability. His NFL role will involve 3rd down packages and returning kicks. --Mark Dulgerian

Round 5, Pick 22 (159) K.J. Dillon S 6'0" 210 West Virginia 5.2

Pick Analysis: Overshadowed by Karl Joseph most of his career, Dillon offers a similar skill set as he shows the range in coverage and striking ability in the box to create some competition on the defensive back depth chart. --Mark Dulgerian

Round 5, Pick 29 (166) (From Patriots) D.J. Reader NT 6'3" 327 Clemson 5.2

Pick Analysis: Reader will be an option for the Texans' vacant nose tackle spot once Vince Wilfork hangs them up. He's battle tested and should spend the next year or so proving why he's the replacement. --Mark Dulgerian

Needs Analysis: The Chargers have needs along the offensive and defensive lines that deserve draft attention this year. For years it was just Antonio Gates, maybe Vincent Jackson and then a slew of guys catching passes from Philip Rivers. Gates doesn't have much left and Ladarius Green bolted via free agency. Finding another threat at the tight end spot would make sense. Eric Weddle departed, but the Chargers added Dwight Lowery. Is that enough? They could still look to add competition at the other safety spot.

Round 1, Pick 3 (3) Joey Bosa DE 6'5" 269 Ohio St. 6.7

Pick Analysis: "Understand that the Chargers' base defense is a 3-4 front. Most people thought that Bosa would go to a 3-4 team. I've seen Bosa stand up and play in space, and he can do that. His playing style is most reminiscent of Everson Griffen of the Vikings." -- Mike Mayock

Round 2, Pick 4 (35) Hunter Henry TE 6'5" 250 Arkansas 6.2

Pick Analysis: "The best tight end in this year's class, Henry has a chance to go in the first round to a TE-needy team. He has good hands, runs routes well and keeps improving as a blocker." -- Charles Davis

Round 3, Pick 3 (66) Max Tuerk C 6'5" 298 USC 5.6

Pick Analysis: "He's as good a pulling center as anybody I've seen. He's an athletic kid." -- Mike Mayock

Round 4, Pick 4 (102) Joshua Perry ILB 6'4" 254 Ohio St. 5.4

Pick Analysis: Perry is a well-rounded inside linebacker with tone-setting capabilities vs the run. He also brings some value as a blitzing weapon if they keep him on the field on 3rd downs. Not a major need for the Chargers, but Perry adds strong competition to their linebacker unit early. -Mark Dulgerian

Round 5, Pick 38 (175) (Compensatory Selection) Jatavis Brown OLB 5'11" 227 Akron 5.5

Pick Analysis: Brown is a highly athletic, rangy 2nd level defender but he's somewhat of a 'tweener because of his size. Still, in today's NFL, range and cover skills are coveted regardless of size. He'll see some time in subpackages. --Mark Dulgerian

Round 6, Pick 4 (179) Drew Kaser P 6'2" 212 Texas A&M 5.3

Pick Analysis: Veteran Charger punter Mike Scifres is entering a contract year after posting a disappointing 38.2 yard net avg last season. Kaser has a booming leg and broke Shane Lechler's single season punt avg twice during his career. The Chargers punting game should be in good hands. --Mark Dulgerian

Round 6, Pick 23 (198) (From Vikings) Derek Watt FB 6'2" 236 Wisconsin 5.0

Pick Analysis: This is an interesting pick since Watt helped pave the way for Melvin Gordon at Wisconsin. The Chargers could utilize more two-back sets to get Gordon more comfortable in the run game. Watt is also no slouch as a receiver. --Mark Dulgerian

Round 7, Pick 3 (224) Donavon Clark OG 6'4" 315 Michigan St. 4.8

Pick Analysis: This is a safe, late-round flyer on a guy familiar with pro concepts on one of the best offensive lines in college football last season. San Diego needs line help, so he's worth a look in camp. --Mark Dulgerian

The Buckeyes flexed their NFL draft muscle again Saturday with this breathtaking feat: The school has had a player selected at every defensive position within draft's first four rounds.

To wit:

Defensive tackle: Adolphus Washington (No. 80, Bills)

Defensive end: Joey Bosa (No. 3, Chargers)

Inside linebacker: Joshua Perry (No. 102, Chargers)

Outside linebacker: Darron Lee (No. 20, Jets)

Cornerback: Eli Apple (No. 10, Giants)

Safety: Vonn Bell (No. 61, Saints)

Perry completed the puzzle Saturday when he was selected by San Diego, where he'll be reunited with Bosa. Ohio State had 12 players selected in the first four rounds, the most by a single school in the modern era (since 1967). They didn't have another choice the rest of the draft, however, as WR Jalin Marshall and DB Tyvis Powell both went undrafted. Both entered the draft as underclassmen.

Ohio State holds the modern record for most players drafted from one school with 14 in the 2004 draft.

'Mr. Irrelevant': Titans take CB Kalan Reed

Everything ends ... even the NFL draft.

Southern Miss cornerback Kalan Reed was selected by the Tennessee Titans with the 253rd and final pick in the 2016 NFL Draft on Saturday in Chicago.

Reed was a 2015 first-team All-Conference USA selection who set career highs as a senior with 56 tackles, four interceptions and 19 pass break-ups. Reed might be the last pick of the draft, but the man can play: Popular analytics site ProFootballFocus.com ranked Reed as No. 54 overall prospect on their board. That's a value buy, Jon Robinson!

Reed inherits the "Mr. Irrelevant" crown from former Louisville tight end Gerald Christian, who was selected as last year's final pick by the Cardinals. Cunningham tore his MCL in Arizona's final preseason game last summer and spent his first season on injured reserve.

As per tradition, Reed will be invited to be the guest of honor for a week-long Mr. Irrelevant celebration in Newport Beach, Calif., this summer. Reed will be awarded The Lowsman Trophy at a dinner banquet. He also gets an undisclosed financial reward, per NFL Media's Charles Davis.

Paul Salata, the Mr. Irrelevant founder who attended 38 NFL drafts, has passed the torch to his daughter, Melanie Fitch, who handed Reed the last ticket to the National Football League this weekend.

You are relevant, Kalan Reed. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

He showed up and played. A new x-factor.

I saw the first half. Bolts look good. I suppose it the holding it through 4 quarters that is the issue.

Bosa does seem to be learning the pro game and kicking it up.
