You make too much sense. That reasonable course is abandoned because of the bullseye that has been on Syria. They are past allowing a peaceful resolution. World leaders are going back to the school recess days.

The peace offer would be more PR for the American people, to show how unreasonable the regime is when it declines. The US would have more public support for the attack.

So 4 Arleigh Burke class destroyers DDG sitting in the Med and the Nimitz in the Gulf. I saw some posts about a large number of tankers in the mideast. Guess with SA and now Iraq they can fly pretty close to Syria for refueling missions.

Nimitz Carrier Strike Group

Nimitz is part of Carrier Strike Group Eleven (CSG-11) with Carrier Air Wing Eleven (CVW-11) embarked, with Nimitz as the flagship of the battle group and the home of the commander of Destroyer Squadron 23.

Ships of DESRON-23

USS Howard (DDG 83)
USS Vandegrift (FFG 48)
USS John Paul Jones (DDG 53)
USS Pinckney (DDG 91)
USS Sampson (DDG 102)
USS William P. Lawrence (DDG-110)
USS Spruance (DDG-111)[4]

Squadrons of CVW-11

Strike Fighter Squadron 154 (VFA-154) "Black Knights" with F/A-18F Super Hornets
Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 323 (VMFA-323) "Death Rattlers" with F/A-18C Hornets
Strike Fighter Squadron 146 (VFA-146) "Blue Diamonds" with F/A-18C Hornets
Strike Fighter Squadron 147 (VFA-147) "Argonauts" with F/A-18E Super Hornets
Electronic Attack Squadron 142 (VAQ-142) "Gray Wolves" with EA-6B Prowlers
Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron 117 (VAW-117) "Wallbangers" with E-2C Hawkeyes
Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 6 (HSC-6) "Screamin' Indians" with MH-60S
Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 75 (HSM-75) "Wolf Pack" with MH-60R[5]
Fleet Logistics Support Squadron 30 Detachment 3 (VRC-30) "Providers" with C-2A Greyhounds

That's a lot of hurt sitting around. Not to mention the other CSG near by.

Any rebel group such as Al Nusra Front that will pose a high risk to Civilians will have to be tracked closely. Weopons, arms, or gear with RFID, vaccinations with RFID, or McDonalds Chicken McNuggets rations will do the trick.

As with today’s Syria hawks, Hitchens supported the campaign against Saddam Hussein on largely humanitarian grounds. And so when post-Saddam Iraq erupted into a massive bloodbath and a civil war among competing jihadists, he was pressured to reconsider his opinion. His critics asked: Why did we go through the exercise of saving Iraq from a genocidal madman if a dozen other mass murderers were simply going to fight over the spoils?

Hitchens explained away the failure of Iraq by saying, essentially, that it was the product of the pathological hatreds and divisions that had built up over Saddam’s reign – and so the civil war probably would have happened anyway, no matter how Saddam’s regime eventually came crumbling down: “If there is a sectarian war in Iraq today, or perhaps several sectarian wars, we have to understand that this was latent in the country, and in the state, and in the society all along.”

My guess is France is there selflessly there on humanitarian grounds. They know how bad the war is and how much worse it can get. Or ...they had a taste of blood in Mali and want more. Kind of like post Gulf War U.S.
