In 1662, Irish Chemist and physicist Robert Boyle studied the relationship between pressure P an the volume V of a gas in a container held at constant pressure.
Boyle observed that the product of the pressure and volume are nearly constant: P x V = C.
A balloon inflated at sea level will expand as it rises in the atmosphere and is subject to decreased pressure.

Re: Boyle's Gas Law
1962? Was a bit earlier than that, no?
Re: Boyle's Gas Law
The law was named after chemist and physicist Robert Boyle, who published the original law in 1662.
