Kobayashi Maru

The no win situation

The Kobayashi Maru is a test in the fictional Star Trek universe. It is a Starfleet training exercise designed to test the character of cadets in the command track at Starfleet Academy. The test's name is occasionally used among Star Trek fans or those familiar with the series to describe a no-win scenario, or a solution that involves redefining the problem.

Rescuing the civilian vessel Kobayashi Maru is the notional primary goal in a simulated battle with the Klingons. The disabled ship is located in the Klingon Neutral Zone, and any Starfleet ship entering the zone would be in violation of the Organian Peace Treaty. The approaching cadet crew must decide whether or not to attempt rescue of the Kobayashi Maru crew – endangering their own ship and lives – or leave the Kobayashi Maru to certain destruction.

The training exercise in Star Trek II describes the Kobayashi Maru as a Class III neutronic fuel carrier-ship commanded by Kojiro Vance with 81 crew members and 300 passengers. Dead weight tonnage: 147,943 MT; cargo capacity: 97,000 MT; length: 237 m; beam: 111m; height: 70m; max cruise speed: wf 3; max emergency speed: wf 6. The name is Japanese: Kobayashi (小林?) means "small grove" and is a common family name; Maru (丸?) is a common suffix for Japanese ship names meaning "round" as in "to return."

A catch-22 is a paradoxical situation in which an individual cannot or is incapable of avoiding a problem because of contradictory constraints or rules. Often these situations are such that solving one part of a problem only creates another problem, which ultimately leads back to the original problem. Catch-22s often result from rules, regulations, or procedures that an individual is subject to but has no control over.

The "Catch-22" is that "anyone who wants to get out of combat duty isn't really crazy." Hence, pilots who request a mental fitness evaluation are sane, and therefore must fly in combat. At the same time, if an evaluation is not requested by the pilot, he will never receive one and thus can never be found insane, meaning he must also fly in combat.

The term catch-22 was coined by Joseph Heller in his novel Catch-22.

Deadlock – in computing, when two processes reach a standstill or impasse, each waiting for the other to finish.

Double bind – a forced choice between two logically conflicting demands.

False dilemma – a situation in which only two alternatives are considered, when in fact there are additional options

Hobson's choice – the choice between taking an option and not taking it.

Lesser of two evils principle – a choice between two undesirable outcomes.

Necessary Evil – anything which, despite being considered to have undesirable qualities, is preferable to its absence or alternative.

Morton's Fork – a choice between two equally unpleasant alternatives.

I thought this was about sushi. So, what kind of cadet are you?

It's a false dilemma!

1. Consult Skynet on the issue, and see if it can provide any solutions.

2. Use R2D2 to use the ships massive 3-D Printing machine to print a fake ship and crew or other klingon bait to another sector of their territory. Troll and distract the klingons using space technology made in another part of the galaxy to cause a minor commotion. The space junk must be untraceable to mankind so that the Klingons don't suspect any hanky panky on our part. Bring heavy guns and set up a pretty close confrontation so that it looks serious enough to rescue and they can move those Klingon ships patrolling the sector out of the way of the rescue mission. This should have Klingon high authority and the distraction crew deadlocked.

Preferably both situations will be 90 degrees to the location of the stranded ship leaving a space in the center for the rescue mission.

4. Use the high speed drone to attach the tether to the ship- preferably some kind of magnetic slinky or shortcut with the long range tractor beam. This should of been researched by R&D years ago. Make sure they can't DDoS the drone, give it new home instructions, and show if off in our face in December again.

5. At the other end of the tether, use a bigger ship or the tractor beam to pull the ship out of there.

6. If the above doesn't work, send in Klingon woman to negotiate.

Congratulations, you passed.

Bonus points awarded for
  • use of the magnetic slinky.
  • overcoming Einstellung
Einstellung is the development of a mechanized state of mind. Often called a problem solving set, Einstellung refers to a person's predisposition to solve a given problem in a specific manner even though "better" or more appropriate methods of solving the problem exist. The Einstellung effect is the negative effect of previous experience when solving new problems.

Sending in the woman, although a very useful move in manipulating humans, is almost always a fail with Klingons. They are aware of it's weaponized usage, frequently using the tactic on humans.

You avoided
  • YOU FAIL IT-YOUR SKILL IS NOT ENOUGH-SEE YOU NEXT TIME-BYE BYE    Weaponized woman assault on Klingon
  • Galley duty

Humans love violence, don't they.

ETs won't be around anytime soon unless they are here to harvest.
