The king of Thailand had an excellent program for sustained teak production. He banned the use of mechanized equipment and the loggers used elephants. The program failed, not because of wood poaching, but because of illegal aliens. They poured across the Cambodian, Chinese, and Burma borders and would slash and burn land for squat farming. They had no idea of the value of the teak, they just burned it. Just burned it on the ground, they did not even use it for cooking. I was there, I saw it with my own eyes.
