The Mysterious 137

If you have ever read Cargo Cult Science by Richard Feynman, you know that he believed that there were still many things that experts, or in this case, physicists, did not know. One of these ‘unknowns’ that he pointed out often to all of his colleagues was the mysterious number 137.

This number is the value of the fine-structure constant (the actual value is one over one-hundred and thirty seven), which is defined as the charge of the electron (q) squared over the product of Planck’s constant (h) times the speed of light (c). This number actually represents the probability that an electron will absorb a photon.

However, this number has more significance in the fact that it relates three very important domains of physics: electromagnetism in the form of the charge of the electron, relativity in the form of the speed of light, and quantum mechanics in the form of Planck’s constant. Since the early 1900’s, physicists have thought that this number might be at the heart of a GUT, or Grand Unified Theory, which could relate the theories of electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, and most especially gravity. However, physicists have yet to find any link between the number 137 and any other physical law in the universe

Experiments have confirmed that at high energy, the electromagnetic interaction and weak interaction unify into a single electroweak interaction. GUT models predict that at even higher energy, the strong interaction and the electroweak interaction will unify into a single electronuclear interaction.

This interaction is characterized by one larger gauge symmetry and thus several force carriers, but one unified coupling constant. Unifying gravity with the electronuclear interaction would provide a theory of everything (TOE) rather than a GUT. GUTs are often seen as an intermediate step towards a TOE.

Could be that the missing links can be found in HIP (hyper interference particles) that move at speeds faster than mankind can measure. Current understanding of time and space deal with EYE (equilibrium yield events) where objects reletively stay static without a JAW (joule acceleration wave). I'm sure more hints for TOE can be found with experiments with LEG (light emitting gravitons). Gravitons being a "hypothetical quantum of gravity and elementary particle that mediates the force of gravity". Perhaps a deligent exploration of the universe will yeild space bodies that have gravitons emitting a light and be measurable. Detection may be done with the worlds GUMS (global umbrella of metoer satellites) that could detect the LEG anomaly on its surface. This can go unoticed unless scientists have the technology to see RIBs (real-time illumination bands) on the object.
