Racism & nationalism hold the most utility for people who would otherwise feel like the bottom rung of society.
When you were born into a dying town & raised in an education system that has been sabotaged by the same people who extract all the resource & economic wealth of said town you often don't have much else to be proud of.
A lot of these people aren't wrong to be resentful or angry, it's just directed at the wrong people. Oddly enough the people who extracting all that wealth used some of it to buy television, radio & print news & installed themselves in a position to tell the useful idiots who is to blame.
