I didn't think actual astronomers call them 'snowballs' or clumps of ice.
I think CNN and other reporters were the snowball crew.

If it from real astronomers, we are hearing it second hand from news and spokespeople. No doubt stuff gets lost in transition. Also I think science is giving both possibilities and people take a pick, their guess.
