Flying cars/pods across the country and continent will revolutionize the world as the previous transportation methods did. What will occur is cheaper travel, end of most traffic jams, end of living in one area, complete lifestyle changes for developed nations around the world, rapid modernization of poor and developing nations.
Main challenges include:
1) Engine/Flight Technology - Using technology that is safe and trackable
2) Energy Source - Sustained power during travel and storing power
3) Laws & Safety - Keeping homes safe
4) Effect on Environment - Avoiding an ancient Egypt outcome
All ideas welcome.

Can use the space above the current highway system to fullfill departure from the current 2-d system with minimal infrstructure adjustments. A netting system can keep ground vehicles and adjacent homes safe. Risk will remain with the flyers.

2) Energy Source - Sustained power during travel and storing power
Towers can be strung up all along the existing highway system to provide power and information to the self driving vehicles.
Challenges include aerodynamics for strong winds at any angle and earthquake proofing.

3) Laws & Safety - Keeping homes safe
River systems and the ocean coast can add protection against homes and business. Electric hubs can be strung along the ocean coast or river fronts where the vehicles autimatically fuel up without human intervention.

FAA to manage rogue vehicles in airspace. Multiple areas for authenticity of craft (just as how checks or currency are determined to be legitimate).
Close concern to keep highway systems safe and stable rather than ticketing drivers (there will be no drivers).

Commercial areas may be approved for dense airspace. Tops of buildings to be remodeled to accomadate port for the vehicles. Buildings with flat roofs valued higher than angled buildings.

Elimination of red zone parking areas that are currently choking the city and residential areas. Flying emergency vehicles (first to use technology) can get closer, pivot, and land near targets that ground vehicles don't allow. Blockage of ground will not be an issue since most will travel in 3-d and not 2-d space. Additionally, need for parking is reduced as most flying vehicles may be a taxi service / possible subscription cheaper than making car payments. Will have no need to park a car (as seen with Uber and Lyft).
