Mississippi River Old River Control Structure

America's Achilles' Heel: the Mississippi River's Old River Control Structure

Image

The mighty Mississippi River keeps on rollin' along its final 300 miles to the Gulf of Mexico south of New Orleans—but unwillingly. There is a more attractive way to the Gulf—150 miles shorter, and more than twice as steep. This path lies down the Atchafalaya River, which connects to the Mississippi at a point 45 miles north-northwest of Baton Rouge, 300 river miles from where the river empties into the Gulf of Mexico southeast of New Orleans.

Two parts on the situation of the river.

Now I see why you are posting...

According to AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Kristina Pydynowski, major river flooding continues at Baton Rouge, Louisiana, farther up from the spillway.

"On May 21, 2019, this flood event will become the longest in duration since the 135-day-long flood event in 1927 at Baton Rouge," Pydynowski said. "The river went above flood stage during the morning of Jan. 6 and is forecast to remain out of its banks through at least mid-June," Pydynowski said.

“River flooding may continue into June as floodwaters in rivers farther north travel southward and add onto the ongoing flooding along the lower Mississippi River,” AccuWeather Meteorologist Brett Rathbun said.

Mother Nature has wanted to change the Mississippi channel for a long time. It's going to happen. With it unplanned it will be less than desirable from the human point of view. Mother Nature will win. (Katrina).

I wonder when. Do I get to see it?

Not by water.

The economics is up in the air. Might be more doom written into it then will occur.

The articles talk about the barge traffic issues.

Do the powers of that area have a disaster recovery plan? Business continuity plans?
