Tribal police shut down a group of climate change activists who blockaded the sole route in and out of the Burning Man Festival in Nevada on Sunday after, they say, someone erroneously reported they were armed.

A coalition of individual activists under the name Seven Circles Alliance set up the blockade to protest the festival's consumerism, which they said is antithetical to Burning Man's counterculture origins. Members of the group chained themselves to a trailer in the road and held signs that read "Abolish capitalism" and "Mother Earth needs our help."

In a statement Tuesday, the group alleged a responding Pyramid Lake Paiute tribal ranger who was pointing a gun told them, "I’m going to take you all out."

"The excessive response is a snapshot of the institutional violence and police brutality that is being shown to anyone who is actively working to bring about systemic change within the United States, including the climate movement," the statement said.

Seven Circles Alliance also said a civilian falsely reported to the rangers that the activists had a firearm.

Both sides screwing over the native Americans. I can understand their anger.

"The excessive response is a snapshot of the institutional violence and police brutality that is being shown to anyone who is actively working to bring about systemic change within the United States, including the climate movement," the statement said.

Nice propaganda but I doubt the climate change was considered. You are screwing up traffic on reservation land.

The Pershing County Sheriff’s Office said it’s investigating “a death which occurred during this rain event.” Authorities did not publicly name the person or provide details on the circumstances of the death.

People of Nevada will get to spend lots of money to bail out the rich folks stuck there.

The gates are shut. No ones driving in or out. I’d be incredibly surprised if any aircraft are cleared to land there either with condition the ground is in. The rich folks are as stranded as everyone else for the moment.

That said… there was a forecast. This weather is not an unexpected freak occurrence. The overwhelmingly smart move would have been to say, “well, that massively sucks, and it’s a huge disappointment, but going to a powdery dry patch of dirt that’s about to get flooded would be a radically stupid thing to do.” And then stay home.

Official word is that “The gate remains closed and no one is allowed to enter or leave via the road or airport.”
Lack of planning on your part does not constitute and emergency on our part.

Doubt this will change the event. Most likely bigger next year.

Panx

Literal shit show

Unreasonable rains flooded the grounds, making it too muddy for vehicles to enter/leave. Everyone is stuck there, no supplies can get in, and no one can empty the porta potties.

Now, sewage is piling up, food is running out, diseases are spreading, and people who packed for a summer trip (while ignoring numerous warnings from experts) are getting hypothermia.

Anyone who wants to leave has to trek through 6 miles of life-threatening desert made twice as impassable by mud so thick it stops trucks dead in their tracks.

Burning Man, Lord of the Flies version.

Guess it is a bit of poor taste making fun but weather checks are typically a very import step of an outdoor event plan.

So, a few inches of rain in Nevada is "A monsoon"?

Ex military person - "this is nothing"

Knew rain would be in play.

Points out some people live in reality and real life, some don't.

While stranded, attendees were advised to conserve food and water. Rumors of deaths at the festival, amplified on social media, contributed to unease. “A couple people didn’t make it,” one Burning Man attendee said in a now-viral video after the flood. (Only one death has been reported.)

Those fears were compounded by a hoax about Ebola spreading among stranded partiers.

Ebola - A bit over the top play by the trolls but I imagine most people there would not realize how unlikely that was.

The equivalent of about three months worth of rain dropped over the desert, CBS News reported. On September 1, up to 1 inch (2.5 centimeters) of rain fell in that area. This region experiences about 6 inches (15.2 cm) of rain each year.

Up to 1 inch of rain wiped out the burners.

Wondering if runoff from afar added additional to the playa.
