Winter disaster and Sen Ted Cruz goes to Cancun

Post by Pigeon » Thu Feb 18, 2021 4:54 pm

In politics, there are a few unwritten rules that every good politician adheres to. Don't compare any situation to Nazi Germany. Don't get out of step with your party base. And perhaps most importantly, when things go sideways for your constituents, don't go on vacation.

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz broke that rule this week when he and his family were spotted hopping on a plane to the resort town of Cancun, Mexico, amid a devastating winter storm and subsequent power grid failure in his home state that has left millions in dire straits.

"I can't believe I have to say this, but: if you're an American pol whose state is enduring a crisis of Katrina-like proportions and instead of going to help your constituents in even a basic, performative sort of way you FLY TO ANOTHER COUNTRY'S BEACH TOWN, you're doing it wrong," tweeted Sonny Bunch, a conservative commentator living in Texas.

That is, of course, exactly right.

No one expects Cruz to fix the problems with Texas power grid. (As I explained on Wednesday, the issue with the grid has its roots in Texas' long-standing belief that it is an independent nation-state, operating entirely apart from the federal government's reach.)

Cruz isn't a power grid expert. Nor, as a senator, does he have any ability to effect immediate change in the way the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), which runs the Texas grid, operates. (ERCOT is overseen by the Texas state legislature and the state's Public Utility Commission.)

But in moments of crisis -- and there are millions of Texans in crisis right now -- people look to politicians for comfort and reassurance. And they do it even if they know that no one particular politician has the ability to help them out of their current problems. They do it because, in theory, our elected officials are leaders in our community and, therefore, are responsible for bringing the community together in moments of tragedy or catastrophe.

Father/husband of the year right here. Not just throwing his kids under the bus but also telling us that his wife is incapable of taking the kids on vacation on her own as well as giving everyone the impression, whether correct or not, that his kids are spoiled brats who can just demand tropical vacations on a whim.

Spoke to a source at United Airlines, Senator Ted Cruz rebooked his flight back to Houston from Cancun for this afternoon at around 6 a.m. today (Thursday). He was originally scheduled to return on Saturday.

EDIT: also being tweeted by Peter Alexander of NBC.

NEW: Ted Cruz booked his return ticket from Cancun to Texas at 6 a.m. today, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. Cruz was initially booked to return on Saturday.

To the conservatives who wonder what we expected Ted Cruz to do? Well seeing as Ted Cruz is a Senator which one of the highest political positions one can be he could:

Meet with President Biden as a show of unity to help Texans

contact millionaire and billionaire donors who can donate funds to secure blankets, bottled water, and generators and help distribute them to communities hit hardest.

Meet with state officials to draw up plans on how to fix the power grid and secure funding through donations to hire contractors to work on power stations that aren't already being worked on

meet with state officials to draw up a plan on how to best prepare the state for the next winter in the event this happens again

create hot meals and contract food truck drivers and other restaurants and go around delivering free hot meals to the millions in need

I'm not even a politician and this is at minimum what I would try to do were I in his shoes.

The whole "he's not a plumber" arguments is so fucking stupid. If there's literally nothing your senator can do to help during your biggest time of need in decades, then why the fuck do you pay 174K/year in taxes for their salary? Same with that mayor saying he doesn't owe his constituents anything. The fact that Beto who isn't even their senator has done more to help than Cruz is honestly mind boggling.

Benghazi got Clinton 13 hours in front of a Congressional hearing. For 3 people who died in a war zone, in a hostile nation who’s active pastime is to kill Americans in their country.

25 people have died in Ted Cruz’s state, largely due to state government negligence and oversight. And to show his support for his constituents, who have to burn their own furniture to stay warm, and boil water so they don’t get dysentery, he packs up the family and jet-sets to Cancun.

This piece of shit deserves to be dragged through the mud. And of course it won’t matter. Infuriating. There are no consequences for the GOP. None

Just my take from what I researched, please add or correct. The Texas government and ERCOT gambled and in the end the house always wins. They decided to save money on winterizing their equipment and never expected the weather would stay this cold for this long. This was a combination of infrastructure failure and cost cutting measures by shutting off power to offset the cost of natural gas which skyrocketed because of the demand. They were willing to do this because they have a monopoly that is not beholden to federal regulations and will not be held accountable because Republicans will not press the issue unless they are worried they will lose their positions. They don't seem worried about losing votes ie: Cruz in Cancun and it doesn't seem like the state itself will have any financial burdens. The people of Texas will be forced to pay to update equipment or will be charged more under that guise with no burden of proof on the company. Everyone with housing damage from this situation will have to go through insurance and the rest of the financial burden will be offset with emergency federal assistance. Obviously, all of that only goes so far and many people will lose their life savings, possessions, etc. ERCOT has legal immunity and the Republican politicians think they can't lose enough seats to Democrats to enact any meaningful legislation so they don't care. ie comments from Rick Perry, Ted Cruz, Dan Crenshaw, Greg Abbot....So they basically bet that it wouldn't be that bad of an outcome because, even if it was, it wouldn't negatively affect the bottom or the party line. The only losers here seem to be the citizens of Texas.

Pretty much sums up reality
