The Balloon

The F-22 that took down China's surveillance balloon used the call sign 'FRANK01' in an apparent homage to a heroic pilot from WWI

On Saturday, as F-22 pilots shot down a Chinese surveillance balloon floating near South Carolina, the callsigns of the airmen contained an apparent homage to a WWI hero.

Onlookers cheered as the pilots, identified as "FRANK01" and "FRANK02," circled China's spy balloon near Myrtle Beach as it floated over the Atlantic Ocean, waiting until the object was safely away from civilians on the ground to avoid the risk of falling debris.

Pilots use callsigns in place of their names when communicating, both for security and identification purposes. The "FRANK" callsigns appear to be a reference to a WWI pilot, Frank Luke, the first airman to receive the Medal of Honor after shooting down over a dozen aircraft, including 10 spy balloons, in just eight days during World War I.

"The military jets using the call sign "FRANK" is significant," Marcus Weisgerber, global business editor for the global security news outlet Defense One, tweeted after the callsigns were identified by an airspace monitoring account.

"Frank Luke Jr. was an American fighter ace in World War I better known as the 'Arizona Balloon Buster.'

He is credited with shooting down 14 German surveillance balloons.

VanHerck said the balloon itself was 200 feet tall, and the sensor payload underneath was the size of a regional jetliner.

Kirby added that the balloon had propellers and a rudder to allow it to change direction speed up, slow and turn, but it relied mostly on the winds and was limited in mobility.

Next 007 or Mission Impossible should involve a spy balloon in the final scene.

Should have played TikTok videos on it as it flew. May it is a test for TikTok streaming in the US should it get banned.

U.S. officials said Friday the undercarriage of the Chinese spy balloon shot down Saturday -- where the surveillance equipment and other technology was housed -- has been located in waters off South Carolina.

If the balloon was simply about gathering information, then most of that same info has already been gotten via money. If it can be collected by flying over, it has been accessible for a long time.

The real reason is something else. Probably about detecting and where the crafts will travel. Don't forget leaders scaring the population is how to control them.

US using one of it's high end spy planes to check out what the balloon was doing.

Dragon Lady can fly higher then the balloon. That can place her between the balloon and satellites.
