This is a breakdown for you. China sent a spy balloon over the U.S. This is not unusual, it’s happened before and it was probably tracked the whole way. The issue is this time, people saw it. Probably due to some kind of malfunction the balloon was lower than normal. Now the government is put into a position. Do they leave it, appear weak to the people and save giving up important intel regarding threat response? Or shoot it down, save face and give up some intel? They went with the latter. Instructions were then given out to the military. This can not happen again. Anything that is not U.S, an aircraft or unidentified, shoot it the fuck down. Now the military are scrambling to shoot down blown away tents, science experiments and weather balloons launched by universities. As the military don’t actually know what they are shooting down, they can’t give a definitive answer and everyone is free to make up anything they want as it can’t be proved wrong. During the investigations it turns out previous admissions knew China was doing this and did nothing. Therefore neither side of the government wants to shout too loud for or against the actions taken in order to avoid highlighting previous decisions.

I agree. Fear runs deep in most of US society so "get it before it gets us" mentality prevails. Security, security, speak to manager ...
