Autonomous drones from who knows where in the universe? But then, the communication aspects comes into play if they are being used to investigate other planets and star systems. If we don't actually know the laws of physics then this might be much more probable.

The idea of a simulation as our reality starts seeming more and more reasonable. So in a sense, god's mouse cursor, might be true.
