The meditation of laughter

Post by lkwalker » Tue Apr 05, 2011 4:05 pm

In my view humor, humor of all kinds, is among the highest callings of humanity. To wit: If there is a God, and in consideration of Her absurd creations, who can deny that humor is not Her highest attribute? Shakespeare characterized human endeavor as being, 'Full of sound and fury, Signifying nothing.' In a word: funny. And he was no fool. The ancient Greeks viewed us as entertaining playthings for the Olympians. And for Socrates even the human folly that condemned him to death struck him as ridiculous and fatuous. His last breath was a quiet laugh. We should all be so wise.

Yeah, but the man died for his principles. There's something there, too.

No. He wanted life. He died for the 'principles' of others. Such as they were...

Of course he wanted life. As to dying for the principles of others... he died because his conflicted with theirs and he wouldn't let up.

How could Socrates have ever 'let up?' He was what he was. He lived in a world of Laws while others concocted their 'principles.' Of course this brings us full circle to my favorite thesis- the distinction between morality and Ethics. But I'll get to that later!

I laugh each day at the concocted and prescribed principals and ethics of the clowns around me.

One of my favorite quotes from one of my favorite people.

"There are things that are real- God, human folly and laughter. The first two are beyond comprehension, so we must do what we can with the third"- John F. Kennedy
A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by little statesman and philosophers and divines. With consistency a great soul has simply nothing to do.

That's a piece of wisdom, right there.

What's FFS?

Hurt my back, and between the heating pad and pain killers my brain is in hibernation mode.

Sorry to hear that, Oz. Something that happens normally or a new injury? :(

FFS - For fuck sake. ;)

An old injury from the gymnastic days. It's only gone out twice on me in the last 20 years. Cleaning the bathtub did it this time.
I'm liking this place. Nice work.
