The import of west European products limited the need for a wide range of artisans and professions in the Baltic cities. The primary professionals in the trading towns were merchants. The merchants drew their profits from the sale of raw materials for shipbuilding and agricultural products. The other artisans in Livonia from the 13th – 17th centuries were engaged in simple production, and were not profit oriented.
