Nah....I don't know where your IT guy is coming from....but the "Java runtime" is pretty benign stuff. Javascript is another puppy altogether. I worked in tech support for a good long time....you can safely update the Java runtime. Of course, they seem to have an update 'bout every 3 weeks.....but, such is progress. At least they address issues in a timely fashion.
