Java has been nagging me to update for some time, but my IT guy told me to be careful, that's a good way to pick up something nasty.

At somepoint you have to update if you want your shit to run smoothly....Alas..

I am still trying to learn how to make MINT run smoothly.

Nah....I don't know where your IT guy is coming from....but the "Java runtime" is pretty benign stuff. Javascript is another puppy altogether. I worked in tech support for a good long time....you can safely update the Java runtime. Of course, they seem to have an update 'bout every 3 weeks.....but, such is progress. At least they address issues in a timely fashion.
